I just joined the forums tonight, but I've been listening to HG World for some time now. I wish I could say I was there from the very beginning, but I was not. I'd like to contribute something to the community right away, so I've decided to share with you a little something about my experiences listening to HG World,
I'm an avid listener to podcasts, and had been listening to works by Scott Sigler and Alex White before HG World. I had just finished listening to "the Zombie Chronicles" by James Melzer, and was looking for a new zombie podcast to listen to. I stumbled onto HG World by doing a search for "Zombie" on iTunes in the podcast section. It sounded cool, so downloaded maybe 7 or 8 episodes to give it a try.
Excited to listen, I made up excuses to drive my car places so I could listen. I listened to the first 4 or 5 episodes as quickly as I could. Now I'm not going to lie - at first I was confused and was ready to walk away from the show. Who the heck was this Todd Rage guy, why is he talking about nothing I'm interested in, and why are the episodes so darn short? I kept double checking the podcast info to make sure this was a zombie show.
After verifying that indeed the show was about a zombie apocalypse, I told myself I have to stay around at least until a zombie shows up in the story. So I kept on listening, and then I heard it - at first it was just "reports" of an outbreak in places far away from the Pennsylvania valley that Todd Rage calls home. Then there was the "incident" at the gas station. Before I knew it, there was a full fledged zombie outbreak in the USA, and people were fighting for their lives.
It was then I realized I CARED about those people. I HAD to know what happened next to them - would the live or would the die? The character of Grey made me shudder thinking about how he treated people when he was alive, never mind what he does when he's been turned into a zombie. Hicks, Ronni, and Dogberry are surviving in a cave in the woods (BTW, that cave sounds AWESOME), but venture out into the wild to search for food and survivors. Every time they leave the cave, one of them might not be coming back. What is to become of them? What about the survivors stuck in the HG World store, or the church on the hill? There are just so many people in this story, it is almost to much to keep track of!
Then, on top of all the zombie chaos, Jay drops in the soldiers McInnes and Grant. I will never forget their intro to the show as they level a building or two filled with the undead. Originally I thought they would lay a swath of death and destruction to the living undead, but I was wrong. Instead they add mystery to the show as they travel to HG World but are forced to leave by a higher authority. Who is this higher authority that can make them leave HG World, a place where survivors are supposed to be rescued from? There are so many questions that need answers.
A side effect of me listening to HG World was my decision to start recording my own podcast. I fell in love with the medium, and wanted to be a part of it, just like HG world.
I have no idea where Jay will be taking us on this story of his, but I think I do know a few things to expect. First, the cruelty of man vs. man will be something explored deeper. Sure it's a zombie story, but I think how the survivors treat each other is often just as bad if not worse than what the zombies do. people's Faith will be tested, and we may not like the results. The mystery of HG World will get deeper, and darker. Lastly, and most importantly, Todd Rage will keep on broadcasting to the survivors in the valley. Todd will be the glue that binds these people together, and rightfully so in my opinion.
We as the listeners get a front row seat to this fantastic drama unfolding before us, and I for one plan on listening to find out what happens next.
Please feel free to comment on my experiences, or add your own to this post.
Good night survivors - you have lived to fight another day.
