One of the most common comments from listeners is about the inconsistent running time for each episode. When "In the Flesh" aired back in July, there was no plan to release hour-long or 90 minute episodes. In fact, there was no real plan at all. After "Heroes of the Zombie War" the next step in learning how to do a larger cast drama with graphic sounds and a formula.
At fifteen minutes, this is about as long as some scenes. It introduces us to some key characters in the story: Hicks, Ronni and Gray. It portrays the first infection to reach Wishwell, PA. It features the staples of typical slasher flicks: Teenagers at play, sexual undertones, violence and monsters.
The original title of the episode was "In-Convenience" - a nod to Kevin Smith's original title for "Clerks". In fact, my total lack of imagination lead me to name all the characters after ones in Clerks: Dante HICKS, Randall GRA(y)ves, VeRONIca and CAITLIN Bree. Ironically, they are not the Clerks as I modeled Carl the clerk on the character in Sling Blade.
At the time it was written, "In-Convenience, part 1" would lead to a second fifteen minute episode where Gray would be killed and eaten while Hicks was left with Caitlin and Ronni looking for a place to hide. At some point, that plot was abandoned so it could be integrated into the larger storyline.
This was an experiment in filters and timing as well as dealing with different ways actors record and deliver lines. This is why there are distinct sound quality differences between actors as two actors delivered lines on internal computer microphones.
The music heard on the tinny convenience store speaker is the French version of Jonathan Coulton's "Re: Your Brains".
