"This zombie story has no zombies."
"It was boring. Same old, same old."
These were the only two web comments I read from listeners about HZW, our first attempt to write, cast, produce, edit and release an audio drama. The purpose of the show was to make sure we could DO all that stuff before announcing a full series of shows.
In the six episodes, National Public Podcast News looks back on individuals who were vital to victory over the zombies in 2010-2011. It does not specify who won, how or what took place, but focuses on an individual's contribution. Carole Stokes plays the part of the narrator, providing a biography of Todd Rage up to the outbreak of Eaters in the Algonquin Valley. Todd, played by the inimitable Keith DeCandido, chews up the microphone as an old, conservative, Vietnam War vet with his own AM radio talk show.
The idea is that everyone listening to the show knows Todd Rage the folk hero/legend of the past. The show deals with his life and struggles. It is also a device to introduce listeners to the town of Wishwell, the valley and its history. I wanted a radio equivalent of an "establishing shot" without dragging down the action in Season Zero. The amount of detail in HZW was to promote a sense of familiarity with Wishwell as several of the characters heard or referenced show up in later episodes; Jenny Jo and Jake Weldon make appearances, for example. In this way, the listener doesn't need as much exposition and they feel they've been to Wishwell before.
But the criticism is well-placed. There ARE NO zombies...or EATERS as we call them...in this story.
I dropped some Easter Eggs into HZW to foreshadow events in Seasons Zero and Season One. Some listeners have pointed out the connections.
HZW was a six-part series. It was removed from the PodoMatic rotation in January and will be remastered for release on CD this year.
